Running Through The Forest

about

Birth is extraordinary and becoming a parent a life altering experience no-one can prepare you for. Navigating the early days as a newly sleep-deprived parent is challenging, filled with moments of joy and despair. A spontaneous melody with the first line of the song “Running Through The Forest” came out of a desperate moment—one in which all else failed to still our crying newborn.

It was beautiful to see peace and calm come over our son every time we sang “running, running, running through the forest, yeah”. Drawing on inspiration from nature and the ups and downs of my own journey through life, it developed over time into a full song. We are not meant to do this life in isolation. I wanted that to come across in the song—that we are doing this journey together. Even when we can’t see the road ahead clearly and when we are tired, there is someone next to us to encourage us and whom we too can encourage. But ultimately it’s a fun song and I really wanted to focus on that aspect in the bridge—it’s a reminder to not get too serious about life and to find joy in the little things that we might sometimes miss. “Running Through The Forest” is a hopeful reminder that there is a way forward, one step at a time.

lyrics

[VERSE 1]
Low clouds
Fog in the trees
Lights filtering through the leaves
And every step the sound beneath our feet
Is the sound closer to where we’re meant to be

[CHORUS]
Running, Running, Running, Running
Running through the forest, yeah
Yeah-y-ah-ah
Running, Running, Running, Running
Running through the forest, yeah
Yeah-y-ah-ah
I’ll be there too
Running with you
I’ll be there too
Running with you-ooo-ooo-ooo
Running with you-ooo-ooo-ooo

[VERSE 2]
Hands tight
Yours’ warms mine
Each lifting the other over the rise
Wide open space, our destiny
Adventure waits, better than I thought it could ever be

[BRIDGE]
Hear the birds
Hear the breeze
Hear the streams babbling with ease
Joy in the journey
See the sunrise, oh don’t worry
Feel the fresh air in our lungs
Horizon’s calling us along
Move our feet off the ground
We come alive
